Alan William Napier-Clavering (7 January 1903 – 8 August 1988), better known as Alan Napier, was an English actor. Born in Birmingham, Napier embarked his career in West End theatre for a decade before having a prolific film career in Britain and later on in Hollywood. Standing at a height of 6 feet 6 inches, Napier was known for his role as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's butler in the 1960s live-action Batman television series. He was first cast in the Batman series in 1965 and stayed with the role until the series' cancellation in 1968. Throughout his career, Napier worked with significant figures like John Gielgud, Robert Morley, Orson Welles, and many more. His career extended into the 1980s covering TV series like QB VII, The Bastard, and Centennial, and retired in 1981, aged 78. Besides his acting, Napier also authored a three-volume autobiography which was later published in 2015 under the title Not Just Batman's Butler.
