What's After the Movie
César Julio Romero Jr. (1907-1994) was a renowned American actor and activist. His career was marked by an extensive variety of screen roles that included Latin lovers, historical figures in costume dramas, characters in light domestic comedies, and notably, the Joker in the live-action Batman television series of mid-1960s, a role that earned him a place in TV Guide's 2013 list of The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time. With a career spanning almost six decades, Romero was active in different forms of entertainment such as film, radio, and television. He often referred to himself as 'a Latin from Manhattan', a nod to his New York City roots and his large family, all of whom he would eventually support with his Hollywood earnings following the Wall Street crash of 1929 which saw his family's sugar-import business come to an unfortunate end. In 1942, Romero enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, attaining the rank of chief boatswain's mate. Romero, despite his on-screen fame, preferred to be a regular part of the crew during his military career. Throughout his life, Romero was a registered Republican and took an active part in politics, supporting election campaigns of the likes of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Apart from his busy career, Romero was known to often make appearances at Hollywood events, escorting famous actresses at the time.
