What's After the Movie
Born on February 24, 1989, Daniel Kaluuya is an English actor and filmmaker who began his illustrious career as a teenager in improvisational theatre. He is a multi-faceted talent who has held positions from acting to writing, directing, and producing. His rise to stardom includes some commendable roles in renowned movies and television series, including Skins (2007–2009), and critically acclaimed roles in movies such as Get Out, Black Panther, etc., which consolidated his position in the entertainment industry. In 2021, he was named among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Kaluuya hails from London and is of Ugandan descent, raised by his mother in Camden Town alongside his older sister. He showed a keen interest in theater from a young age and even wrote his first play at nine years old. Co-directing the drama The Kitchen in 2023 is among his recent works. As his career transitioned to the big screen, his award-winning role in Jordan Peele's horror film Get Out brought him under the limelight, and he hasn't looked back since. His portrayal of Fred Hampton in the biopic Judas and the Black Messiah earned him an Academy Award and the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Kaluuya continues his impressive run with a range of performances to this day - his strong characters in films like Widows (2018), Queen & Slim (2019), and his contributions behind the camera through his newly formed production company, 59%. Showing an impressive range, he also voices characters like the one in the animated superhero film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, due for release in 2023.
