Emily Savitri Haines, known as Emily Haines, is a Canadian singer and songwriter most recognized as the lead singer, keyboardist, and songwriter of the rock band Metric and a member of the musical collective Broken Social Scene. As a solo artist, she has performed under her own name and as Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Born in New Delhi, Haines grew up in a creative household, filled with experimental art and musical expression. Her influences included Carla Bley, Robert Wyatt, and PJ Harvey. She first ventured into music with her first band, formed with Amy Millan and Kevin Drew, with whom she would later collaborate in Broken Social Scene. Haines later attended the University of British Columbia and Montreal's Concordia University, and during her student years, she distributed a limited-edition album entitled Cut in Half and Also Double. Her professional career in music took off after meeting James Shaw in Toronto in 1997. The pair began performing as a duo called Mainstream, later changing the band's name to Metric after a sound programmed by Shaw on his keyboard. Metric released nine studio albums from 2003 to 2023. In addition to her work with Metric, Haines has had multiple guest appearances, solo releases, and contributed vocals to numerous songs by various artists. She also contributed to the soundtrack of several films and a notable appearance in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off in 2023 as the singing voice of Envy Adams.
