Ernest Borgnine, born Ermes Effron Borgnino, was an iconic American actor whose career spanned over six decades. Noted for his gruff yet relaxed voice, Borgnine made the transition from supporting roles to unconventional leads in numerous films. His breakthrough arrived in 1955 when he played a lovable butcher in 'Marty', winning the Academy Award for the Best Actor. Borgnine also showcased his versatility through his appearances in the sitcom 'McHale's Navy' and in the action series 'Airwolf'. His career did not skid to a halt with time; at age 92, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his work on the final season of 'ER'. Before his acting career, Borgnine served in the United States Navy for almost 10 years during World War II. His military service earned him various awards, including the Navy Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was also known for his philanthropy work, particularly towards military personnel and their families.
