What's After the Movie
Grace Patricia Kelly (November 12, 1929 – September 14, 1982), also known as Grace of Monaco, was an American actress who achieved stardom in the early to mid-1950s. Her rise to fame came with several significant Hollywood films, leading to an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a spot on the American Film Institute's 25 Greatest Female Stars list. Born into a prominent Catholic family in Philadelphia, Kelly graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1949 and began her career in NYC theatrical productions and television broadcasts. She made her film debut in Fourteen Hours (1951) and gained stardom from roles in films like High Noon (1952) and The Country Girl (1954) for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. After her marriage to Prince Rainier III in 1956, she retired from acting and became the Princess of Monaco, focusing on her duties as a royal as well as charity work, especially towards children and the arts. Despite receiving offers to return to acting, notably from Alfred Hitchcock, she never resumed her screen career.
Grace passed away in 1982 after suffering a stroke while driving, leading to a car crash. Her contributions to cinema and her iconic fashion style have left a lasting legacy. Her children, Princess Caroline, Prince Albert, and Princess Stéphanie, continue to uphold her charitable initiatives. The Princess Grace Foundation, founded by Grace herself, supports local artisans in Monaco, while the AMADE Mondiale, her organization for children's rights, has gained consultative status within UNICEF and UNESCO. Her lasting influence on pop culture, particularly in film and fashion, remains evident decades after her untimely death.
