Géza Röhrig

Géza Röhrig, born May 11, 1967 in Budapest, Hungary, is a deeply talented actor and poet. He is widely recognized for his acclaimed performance in the 2015 film, Son of Saul, which bagged the coveted Grand Prix at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Despite experiencing life's adversities early on — losing his parents and spending his childhood in foster care, Röhrig showed remarkable resilience. From the age of 12, he was brought up by a Jewish family. In the 1980s, he was the frontman of an underground band called Huckleberry.

Following a visit to Auschwitz during a study tour in Poland, Röhrig committed to becoming an Orthodox Jew and moved to Brooklyn, United States. Besides acting, Röhrig has expressed his profound interiority through poetry. He has published two collections of poems, 'Hamvasztókönyv' ('Book of Incineration') and 'Fogság' ('Captivity'), grappling with the theme of the Shoah. As a polymath, he also graduated with a degree in filmmaking from the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest. Since 2000, Röhrig has called the Bronx borough of New York City home, where he earned a degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary and works as a kindergarten teacher at the Hannah Senesh Community Day School in Brooklyn. Known for his dedication to his work, he continues to act, write, and educate.
