What's After the Movie
Helen Johns is a former politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1995 to 2003. Born on April 24, 1953, in Toronto, Ontario, she held various ministerial positions within the Progressive Conservative governments led by Mike Harris and Ernie Eves. Prior to entering politics, Johns had a successful career in business, working as a controller for small and medium-sized businesses for fifteen years. Her background also included serving as the Director and Treasurer of the Huron United Way, showcasing her commitment to community service. Johns' political journey began with her election victory in the 1995 provincial election, representing the riding of Huron. During her initial term, she served as a backbench member. In preparation for the 1999 election, electoral boundaries were redrawn, leading to a competition for the Tory nomination in the newly created riding of Huron—Bruce. Johns emerged victorious and secured her re-election against Liberal candidate Ross Lamont. Her dedication and experience led to her appointment as Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation on June 17, 1999. Later, she transitioned to become the Associate Minister of Health and Long-Term Care under Tony Clement in February 2001. When Ernie Eves assumed the premiership in April 2002, Johns was entrusted with the crucial role of Minister of Agriculture and Food. She also briefly served as the interim Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in early 2003.
