Henry Travers

Henry Travers, born as Travers John Heagerty (5 March 1874 – 18 October 1965), was an applauded English film and stage character actor. He was best known for his specialized depictions of slightly foolish yet sympathetic and likable older men. Travers' most celebrated role was of the guardian angel Clarence Odbody in the 1946 film 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Besides this, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting act in 'Mrs. Miniver' (1942). Some of his other distinguished performances could be seen in 'The Invisible Man' (1933), 'Dark Victory' (1939), and 'High Sierra' (1941).

Travers was born in Prudhoe, Northumberland. His upbringing was in Berwick-upon-Tweed. His acting career commenced in 1894, and for decades he illuminated the stage with his performances, even appearing in over 30 plays on Broadway. He skillfully portrayed characters of people significantly older than himself, often taking on the roles of doctors, judges, and father figures. He retired in 1949 after his final role in 'The Girl From Jones Beach'. Covering his total career, he acted in 52 films. He was married twice and was known in his personal life as a warm and charming individual.
