What's After the Movie
Herman Bing, born on March 30, 1889 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, was a German-American character actor. He was known for his signature wild-eyed facial expressions and thick German accent. Bing began his career in the circus at the tender age of 16, showcasing his comedic talents, before moving on to vaudeville. His film debut commenced in 1921 with "Ciska Barna, die Zigeunerin". Before he migrated to America in 1923, Bing was production chief of several films in Germany. He moved with director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau to the US, working as Murnau's interpreter and assistant director. He also worked under John Ford and Frank Borzage, before establishing himself as a successful character actor. His most notable role was providing the voice for the Ringmaster in Walt Disney's classic Dumbo (1941). Sadly, the start of World War II in Europe led to the decline of his career, as his German accent was no longer in demand in post-war Hollywood. This caused a great deal of depression for Bing, leading to his suicide by gunshot in 1947.
