Hoagland Howard Carmichael, widely known as Hoagy Carmichael, was an eminent American musician, composer, songwriter, actor, and even lawyer. Born on November 22, 1899, he was noted for his monumental contribution to the music industry, chiefly in the epoch of the 1930s. Having written several hundred songs and pivotal sound recordings, Carmichael was synonymous with innovation and versatility. He was one of the most successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters of his time and pioneered the art of singer-songwriting in the era of mass communication. Carmichael's compositions, including 50 hits, have carved their niche in music history. His notable works range from 'Stardust', 'Georgia on My Mind', to 'Heart and Soul'. His collaborations with several lyricists like Johnny Mercer on 'Lazybones' and 'Skylark' have been much celebrated. An Academy Award nominee and a victor, Carmichael was an actor too, featuring in 14 films. He hosted three musical-variety radio programs, performed on television, and penned two autobiographies.
