He acted in minor roles in films such as Contraband (2012), and Broken City (2013) at the start of his career. His compelling portrayal in Straight Outta Compton earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. Mitchell's filmography also includes Keanu (2016), Barry (2016), The Disaster Artist (2017), and Kong: Skull Island (2017). He has demonstrated his versatile acting ability with appearances in critically acclaimed films like Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit (2017), Dee Rees' Mudbound (2017), and Janicza Bravo's Zola (2021).
