John Beach Litel (December 30, 1892 – February 3, 1972) was an influential American film and television actor with a career span that ran from 1919 to 1967. His career kicked off on the stage, his Broadway credits include acclaimed productions like 'Sweet Aloes' (1935), 'Life's Too Short' (1935), 'Before Morning' (1932), 'Lilly Turner' (1932), and 'Irene' (1919) among others. In 1929, Litel transitioned to film, becoming a part of the 'Warner Bros. Stock Company' in the 1930s. An incredibly prolific actor, he is credited with over 200 film appearances throughout his career. He was well-known for his wide range of supporting roles like hard-nosed cops, district attorneys, and was even Nancy Drew's attorney father in four films between 1938 and 1939. His film highlights include 'They Drive by Night' (1940), 'Knute Rockne, All American' (1940), 'They Died with Their Boots On' (1941), and 'Scaramouche' (1952). His last film role was in 'Nevada Smith' (1966). On television, he made notable appearances in series such as Disney's Zorro, Stagecoach West, and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Litel passed away in 1972 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital.
