**John Keith Vernon** (born Adolphus Raymondus Vernon Agopsowicz; February 24, 1932 – February 1, 2005) was a prolific Canadian actor who made a significant career in Hollywood after achieving initial television stardom in Canada. Best known for his roles as Dean Wormer in Animal House, Mayor in Dirty Harry and Fletcher in The Outlaw Josey Wales, his imposing screen presence and voice made him a memorable part of many classic films. Born as Adolphus Raymondus Vernon Agopsowicz in Zehner, Saskatchewan, of Armenian, German, and Polish descent, Vernon began his acting career at the Regina Little Theatre. He was educated at the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before cementing himself as a live stage actor for CBC's dramatic programs. Vernon made his screen debut in 1956 and enjoyed a long and varied career, including voicing Tony Stark/Iron Man and Sub-Mariner in The Marvel Super Heroes, Rupert Thorne in Batman: The Animated Series, and Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm. He played villainous and heroic roles with equal panache, gaining him a reputation as a versatile actor. His television and film career spanned almost five decades, appearing in cult exploitation films, action flicks, and renowned dramatic roles. His later years saw him involved in numerous voice roles, showcasing his distinct and much-admired voice acting skills. He tragically died of complications following heart surgery in 2005.
