Sir Jonathan Pryce CBE changed his name from John Price when joining the Equity, the actors' union, due to the similarity with an already established performer. Pryce was born on 1 June 1947, in Carmel, Flintshire, and is a Welsh actor known for his deeply impactful stage and film performances, for which he has been honored with a knighthood for services to drama, two Tony Awards, and two Laurence Olivier Awards. He has also received nominations for an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two British Academy Film Awards. He began his career in the early 1970s after studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and transitioned to screen acting with a breakthrough performance in Terry Gilliam's satirical comedy film Brazil in 1985. He was acclaimed for his roles in big-budget films such as Evita, Tomorrow Never Dies, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, as well as independent films and television series. In recent years he received his first Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Pope Francis in The Two Popes as well as attention for his work on the award-winning Netflix historical drama series The Crown, which he joined in 2022.
