Joseph Marcell

Joseph Marcell, born on 14 August 1948, is a celebrated Saint Lucian-British actor and comedian. The actor is best recognized for his role as Geoffrey Butler, the butler on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a popular series that aired from September 1990 to May 1996. Marcell, originally from Saint Lucia, relocated to the United Kingdom at the age of nine and grew up in Peckham, South London. He received his education in speech and dance at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Residing in Banstead, Surrey, he continues to be an active member of the acting community. A prolific actor, Marcell made a name for himself domestically and internationally. During his formative years in Peckham, South East London, Marcell became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company where he displayed his acting prowess in productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream. His talent also saw him appearing in feature films and on television, primarily in Britain. Adding to his accolades, he serves on the board of the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London and has been involved in nationwide productions such as Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and King Lear. Some of his notable stage performances include roles in The Tempest, Gem of the Ocean, and Lady Windermere's Fan. His unwavering commitment to theatre led him to rehearse for the role of Titus Andronicus in July 2017 for the La Grande Shakespeare Company.
