Lane Smith, born as Walter Lane Smith III, was an accomplished American actor renowned for his roles in numerous films and TV shows. He was notably known for his role as newspaper editor Perry White in the ABC series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. His other notable roles include Walter Warner in Son in Law, Nathan Bates in the NBC series V, Mayor Bates in Red Dawn, and U.S. President Richard Nixon in The Final Days, which led to a Golden Globe award nomination. He made his film debut in Maidstone in 1970, and throughout the 1970s, he became a regular feature in small film roles, including Rooster Cogburn in 1975 and Network in 1976. He gained recognition in 1989 for his depiction of Richard Nixon in The Final Days. His portrayal, which detailed the disillusionment and regret of the former president, captivated the audience, earning him a Golden Globe nomination. Despite his deteriorating health, Smith continued to mesmerize on the screen until his final film appearance in The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000).
