Loretta Devine

**Loretta Devine**, born August 21, 1949, is a renowned American actress known for her versatility across stage and screen. She made her debut on Broadway in 1978 and rose to fame for her role as Lorrell Robinson in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls in 1981, a role she originated. Throughout her illustrious career, she has portrayed various high-profile characters such as Gloria Matthews in 'Waiting to Exhale' and Adele Webber on 'Grey's Anatomy', a medical drama that won her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Devine also credited for her role as Juanita Sims in the 2010 film adaptation of 'For Colored Girls'. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Devine grew amidst six siblings, with a single mother at the helm. Her journey in performing arts began at George Washington Carver High School where she was active in the pep squad and participated in talent shows. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Drama from the University of Houston in 1971, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in Theater from Brandeis University in 1976.
