Olympia Dukakis (June 20, 1931 – May 1, 2021) was an acclaimed American actress with a prolific career spanning six decades. Dukakis was recognized for her remarkable talent on both screen and stage, performing in over 130 stage productions, around 60 films, and approximately 50 television series. She made her mark initially in theater, winning an Obie Award for Best Actress in Bertolt Brecht's Man Equals Man in 1963. Dukakis transitioned to film acting and for her outstanding performance in Moonstruck (1987) she received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, taking her to the pinnacle of her career. In the following years, she earned Emmy nominations for Lucky Day (1991), More Tales of the City (1998) and Joan of Arc (1999). In 2003, she published her autobiography Ask Me Again Tomorrow: A Life in Progress. Her life was celebrated in a feature-length documentary, Olympia, which released in 2018.
Dukakis was born into a Greek immigrant family in Lowell, Massachusetts. Passionate about acting from an early age, she started her career in theater with productions at the Williamstown Summer Theater. Throughout her career, she performed across variety of venues including the Delacorte Theater and the famed Broadway. Dukakis co-founded the Whole Theater Company with her husband, Louis Zorich. Her stage directing credits include classics like Orpheus Descending, The House of Bernarda Alba, Uncle Vanya, as well as more contemporary works. Dukakis appeared in numerous films, including Steel Magnolias and Mr. Holland's Opus, and is highly recognized for her performance in Moonstruck. Her television roles included Anna Madrigal in the Tales of The City mini-series. In her personal life, she was a strong advocate for women's and LGBT rights.
