Ralph du Vergier Truman, born on May 7, 1900 in London, England was a prominent English actor known for his remarkable speaking voice. He usually played the roles of either a villain or an authority figure which marked his singular and unique style. Originally, Truman studied at the Royal College of Music, and by 1925 he had started to perform regularly on radio, appearing in an estimated 5,000 broadcasts over his career. His illustrious career included unforgettable roles such as Tigellinus in MGM's 'Quo Vadis' (1951), the French herald Mountjoy in Laurence Olivier's film 'Henry V' (1944), the evil Monks in David Lean's 'Oliver Twist' (1948), George Merry in the Walt Disney version of 'Treasure Island' (1950), and the Police Inspector in Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)'. He also made appearances in episodes of diverse TV series, including 'Danger Man'. With a career that spanned decades, Truman's contribution to the field of acting was notable. On 15 October 1977, Truman passed away in Ipswich, Suffolk.
