Roger Ashton-Griffiths

Roger Ashton-Griffiths (born 19 January 1957) is an English character actor, screenwriter, and film director. He is best known for his role as Mace Tyrell in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. Born in Hertfordshire, Ashton-Griffiths attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in Manchester. He then studied musicology at Lancaster University, a member of Furness College, graduating in 1978. He commenced his professional journey with a stint as a singer with the English National Opera at the London Coliseum between 1979 and 1981.

Ashton-Griffiths's cinematic repertoire is prolific, appearing in numerous renowned films, including Terry Gilliam's Brazil and The Brothers Grimm, Dreamchild, Young Sherlock Holmes, Gene Wilder's Haunted Honeymoon, Roman Polanski's Pirates, and others. Moreover, he has also contributed significantly to television with roles in Jack the Ripper, The Odyssey, Merlin and of course, the celebrated series Game of Thrones. In 2023, Ashton-Griffiths transitioned to the literary world with the debut of his novel 'The Case of Cat Adam'. Furthermore, he has an MA in fine art from the University of East London (2003), and a PhD in creative writing from the University of East Anglia (2016).
