Rupert William Penry-Jones, born on 22 September 1970, is a renowned British actor. He famously played Adam Carter in Spooks, Clive Reader in Silk, DI Joseph Chandler in Whitechapel, and Mr. Quinlan in the American horror series, The Strain. Born to Welsh actor Peter Penry-Jones and English actress Angela Thorne, his early life was deeply rooted in the performing arts. Penry-Jones was closely connected to the Indian Army through his maternal grandfather and discovered he had Indian ancestry from the 19th century. After securing an education at Dulwich College, London, he attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. However, he was expelled for a 'bad attitude'. Penry-Jones first appeared on television with his mother in Cold Comfort Farm in 1995. After making his London stage debut in 1995, he explored various roles delving into the world of theatre. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon, playing in Don Carlos and Timon of Athens. His performance in Don Carlos won the 1999 Ian Charleson Award. He worked with Dervla Kirwan in J.B. Priestley's thriller 'time-play' Dangerous Corner which ultimately led to their marriage. Furthermore, he ventured into television doing several BBC series and ITV dramas. In 2008, he won the ITV3 Crime Thriller Award for his role in Spooks. Between 2012-2014, he worked alongside Maxine Peake in legal drama Silk and proceeded to appear in A Little Chaos with Kate Winslet. From 2014–2017, he was a part of Guillermo del Toro's The Strain, which required wearing prosthetics and makeup for 29 episodes over 3 seasons. He also bagged a role in the 2020 film, The Batman, as Gotham City Mayor Don Mitchell, Jr.
