Shabana Azmi, born on 18th September 1950, is renowned as an Indian actress with a prolific career in film, television, and theatre. Azmi's repertoire is noteworthy for spanning over 160 films, primarily within the independent and neorealist parallel cinema. Yet, her work extends to mainstream films and several international projects. As one of India's acclaimed actresses, she is recognized for her distinct, often unconventional roles across numerous genres. A record holder of five National Film Awards for 'Best Actress', Azmi has also won six Filmfare Awards and numerous international acclamations. In addition to her acting prowess, she is a social and women's rights activist. The daughter of noteworthy poet Kaifi Azmi and stage actress Shaukat Azmi, she graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Her film debut in 1974 with 'Ankur' established her as a leading actress of parallel cinema. Her films are often resonant with progressivism and realistic portrayal of Indian society, its customs, and traditions. Besides her on-screen work, Azmi serves as a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA). Acknowledging her contributions, the President of India nominated her to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament.
