Trevor Howard

What's After the Movie

Trevor Howard

Trevor Wallace Howard-Smith, known as Trevor Howard, was an English stage and screen actor (1913-09-29 to 1988-01-07). Howard made his mark as a new breed of male lead in British films with his roles in post-war classics such as 'Brief Encounter' (1945) and 'The Third Man' (1949), suggesting eerily a neurosis beneath his character's tweedy exterior. His acting career saw him nominated four times for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor, winning with 'The Key' (1958) and earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in 'Sons and Lovers' (1960). Despite controversies surrounding his military service, Howard enjoyed a successful career, with notable performances in 'Golden Salamander' (1950), 'Mutiny on the Bounty' (1962) and 'Gandhi' (1982). Howard was educated at Clifton College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), making his professional debut at the Gate Theatre in 'Revolt in a Reformatory' (1934) while still a student. He worked extensively in theatre, showcasing his talent in productions like 'The Rivals', and performances at Stratford-upon-Avon. Despite confusion over his birth year, official records confirm Howard was born in 1913. His next of kin included his sister, an actress, and his spouse, Helen Cherry.
