The 49th Directors Guild of America Awards honored outstanding directorial achievements in films, documentaries, and television for 1996. The ceremony was held on March 8, 1997 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza and the Sheraton New York Hotel, with simultaneous ceremonies hosted by Carl Reiner in Los Angeles and Mary Tyler Moore in New York. Nominees for the feature film and documentary categories were announced in January and February 1997.
