David Robert Mitchell

David Robert Mitchell, born on October 19, 1974, is a highly recognized American film director and writer. His rise to prominence came after his second feature, the critically-acclaimed horror film It Follows (2014). Born in Clawson, Michigan, Mitchell pursued his interest in the arts by attending Wayne State University in Detroit and later graduating from the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts with a Master of Fine Arts degree in production. His journey in the film industry began with his first full-length film – a coming-of-age drama titled The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010), which was produced with the help of his film school friend, Adele Romanski. According to Mitchell, the film was made on a modest budget of $50,000. His career took a significant turn when he directed the supernatural horror film It Follows. The film not only gathered praise from critics but also became a commercial success, given its independent film budget. In addition to his directing responsibilities, Mitchell notably served as a jury member in the Critics' Week section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. In 2018, he helmed Under the Silver Lake, a postmodern noir comedy-drama film set in Los Angeles and starred Andrew Garfield. More recently, a sequel to It Follows, titled They Follow, has been announced to be in pre-production, expected to begin filming in 2024 with the return of Mitchell as both writer and director.
