Peter Bogdanovich (July 30, 1939 – January 6, 2022) was an American director, writer, actor, producer, critic, and film historian. A prominent filmmaker as part of the New Hollywood movement, Bogdanovich began his career as a film critic for Film Culture and Esquire. His initial ventures included a film journalist stint until he got hired to work on Roger Corman's The Wild Angels, which opened his debut in the world of filmmaking. Bogdanovich's breakthrough came through the drama The Last Picture Show, earning him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. His acclaimed works include What's Up, Doc?, Paper Moon, Saint Jack, They All Laughed, Mask, Noises Off, The Cat's Meow, and She's Funny That Way. He also became a significant figure in acting with notable roles in the HBO series The Sopranos and Orson Welles's last film, The Other Side of the Wind. Bogdanovich's career witnessed him directing documentaries like Directed by John Ford and The Great Buster: A Celebration and winning a Grammy for Best Music Film for directing Runnin' Down a Dream, a documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. His published books include in-depth interviews with film titans like Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Welles.
