Pietro Marcello

Pietro Marcello, born on 2 July 1976, is a virtuoso Italian filmmaker recognized for directing more than ten documentaries and feature films from 2004 till present. His captivating storytelling technique has led his works to be showcased at numerous international film festivals, gathering various awards and nominations. His 2009 docudrama, The Mouth of the Wolf (La bocca del lupo), chronicles the poignant story of Vincenzo Motta, a long-term inmate of a Genoa prison, and his love affair with a trans woman named Mary Monaco. The film, which premiered at the 2009 Torino Film Festival, took home the FIPRESCI Prize for best film and was selected for the prestigious 60th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Caligari Film Award and Teddy Award for best documentary.

Marcello's cinematic adaptation of Jack London's masterpiece, Martin Eden, brilliantly juxtaposes the novel's themes and characters against a post-war setting in Naples. Premiering at the main competition of the 76th Venice International Film Festival, the film was a critical success. Marcello's celebrated work received nominations at the 33rd European Film Awards, 65th David di Donatello (winning Best Adapted Screenplay), Gotham Independent Film Awards 2020, and surprisingly won the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2019. Despite his successes, there's still much to expect from Marcello's compelling narrative skill.
