What's After the Movie
Takashi Miike is a renowned Japanese film director, film producer and screenwriter, best known for his controversial and oftentimes shocking work. Born on August 24, 1960, Miike has been prolific in the Japanese film industry, having directed over 100 feature films, television productions and direct-to-video releases since his debut in 1991. His films span a variety of genres, from violent and bizarre tales to more dramatic and family-friendly movies. He is particularly known for films such as Audition, Ichi the Killer, Visitor Q, Dead or Alive, One Missed Call, and a number of remakes. He has also acted in over 20 films, further exhibiting his versatility within the film industry. Miike has been celebrated for his work but has also faced criticism for the extreme graphic violence in some of his films. In terms of Miike's career trajectory, his first pieces were primarily television productions, along with several direct-to-video V-Cinema releases. His theatrical debut was the film The Third Gangster, but it was Shinjuku Triad Society that gained public attention and allowed him to work on higher-budgeted pictures. Miike has also faced controversy due to heavy violence in his films. His horror film Ichi the Killer was subject to censorship in various countries due to its extreme levels of sexual violence towards women.
