What's After the Movie
Tom Shadyac, born as Thomas Peter Shadyac on December 11, 1958, gained prominence in the American film industry as a director, producer, and writer. He holds the accolade for being the youngest joke-writer for comedian Bob Hope. Shadyac, largely recognized for scripting and directing comedy films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Patch Adams, and Bruce Almighty, veered into documentaries after his retirement from the comedy genre in 2010. His documentary I Am reflects his transformation post a life-changing bicycle accident. Leaving behind his materialistic lifestyle, he explores themes of human connectedness, happiness, and the human spirit in this work. Apart from filmmaking, Shadyac is known for his teaching stint at universities like Pepperdine University's Seaver College, University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Memphis. In 2018, he opened Memphis Rox, a non-profit, pay-what-you-can climbing gym and community center at South Memphis.
Born in Falls Church, Virginia, Shadyac found an early interest in comedy and performed various character roles during his high school at J. E. B. Stuart. His career took him to Los Angeles where he became Bob Hope's staff joke writer at age 24. Some of his prominent collaborations include working with Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar, and Eddie Murphy on The Nutty Professor movie series. Post a traumatic bicycle accident in 2007, Shadyac underwent a significant shift in his personal and professional life. In addition to publishing a book named 'Life's Operating Manual' in 2013, Shadyac divested much of his possessions, made philanthropic contributions and reoriented his career emphasis towards teaching and documentaries.
