In 1972, amid the tumult of war in South Vietnam, a group of American soldiers make a desperate effort to evacuate their wounded comrade. Unfortunately, during this frantic ordeal, they are left behind as the helicopter carrying Blaster, Sailor, and Wilkes departs without them. This gut-wrenching experience becomes the catalyst for retired Marine Colonel Jason Rhodes, whose unyielding quest for answers intensifies a decade later.
Fast forward to the early 1980s: Colonel Rhodes is still grappling with the haunting uncertainty of his son Frank’s fate, an Army Lieutenant who has been missing in action since that tragic day in 1972. Despite numerous false leads and thwarted attempts, his belief that Frank is alive and imprisoned in Laos remains unshaken, even in the face of indifference from the United States government.
As he scours Southeast Asia, Rhodes finds kinship with fellow Vietnam War veterans, united in their shared mission to bring their missing brothers home. They include Blaster, Wilkes, Sailor, Johnson, Charts, and Kevin Scott, a former Force Recon Marine whose own father has also been classified as MIA. Rallying these determined men, Rhodes organizes a daring rescue mission.
With the financial support of McGregor, a wealthy oil entrepreneur with a personal connection to the mission, the team undertakes intense training in Galveston, Texas. However, upon arrival in Southeast Asia, their plans hit a snag when the CIA intervenes, seizing their gear and weapons due to fears of an international incident.
Unfazed, the group pools their money to obtain new supplies, all while Rhodes contacts an old acquaintance named Jiang, a former drug lord who has also lost a son in the Vietnam conflict. Jiang supplies them with outdated yet dependable World War II weapons and sends his daughters Lai Fun and Mai Lin along for the perilous journey. As they traverse this perilous terrain, Charts and Lai Fun begin to develop a fragile bond.
As the mission progresses, the team must not only battle with the grim realities of war but also confront their own inner struggles, with past traumas surfacing during this intense expedition. When they get closer to the Laotian border, disaster strikes: a violent encounter with a border patrol squad results in the death of Mai Lin.
The team splinters into two factions: Rhodes’ group, known as the “air team,” made up of Charts, Sailor, Johnson, and Lai Fun, focuses on securing an escape chopper, while the “ground team,” which includes Jiang, Blaster, Scott, and Wilkes, scouts a nearby prison camp. Their breakthrough moment comes when they discover four American prisoners, but the uncertainty of Frank’s whereabouts weighs heavily on them.
As night descends, both teams prepare for an anticipated assault. Blaster diligently positions explosives, while Rhodes guides the air team through the hostile jungle. Their coordinated attack unleashes chaos, with Blaster sacrificing himself to safeguard the prisoners against escaping, even as the helicopters are delayed. Tragedy strikes again when Jiang falls to enemy fire during the attack, but amidst the turmoil, the surviving members, along with the freed POWs, manage to escape, including McGregor’s son. Yet, Frank’s fate remains a source of anguish.
In the aftermath, Sailor, critically injured in a courage-fueled act of heroism, eliminates the remaining guards by detonating a grenade, paving the way for their hurried exit. Finally, the helicopter ascends into the sky with Rhodes, Wilkes, Scott, Charts, Johnson, Lai Fun, and the four American POWs safely on board.
Back home, McGregor’s son discloses to Rhodes that Frank had tragically succumbed to illness shortly after his capture, despite the valorous attempts of his fellow POWs to provide care. It becomes apparent that Frank was the same soldier who bravely saved McGregor during the harrowing evacuation in 1972—an act of valor forever etched in McGregor’s memory.
Upon returning, Rhodes is welcomed as a hero, celebrated amidst a wave of media attention and heartfelt reunions with those he loves. Finally finding closure concerning Frank, Rhodes shares a touching embrace with his wife, Helen, cherishing the joy of their long-awaited reunion.
