What's After the Movie
Sir John Anthony Quayle CBE was a British actor, theatre director, and novelist born on 7 September 1913. Quayle served in the Royal Artillery, British Army during the Second World War which greatly affected his life. His acting career included numerous high-profile roles in films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Guns of Navarone, The Fall of the Roman Empire, and The Eagle Has Landed. He was knighted in 1985 for his services to the Theatre. His first film role was as an Italian wigmaker in Pygmalion and he later played significant parts in Alfred Hitchcock's The Wrong Man and Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Battle of the River Plate. His television work included the drama series Strange Report and the television film adaptation of The Bourne Identity. In his personal life, Quayle was married twice. His first wife was actress Hermione Hannen, to whom he was married from 1935 to 1941. His second wife, American-born actress Dorothy Hyson, bore him two daughters and a son. Quayle is also known for his writing, authoring two novels and an autobiography. His first novel, Eight Hours from England, is a semi-fictional account of his war service with the S.O.E. in Albania. Quayle passed away from liver cancer on 20 October 1989.
