Plot Summary

As the Axis powers concocted a plan to intimidate neutral Turkey into joining their side in 1943, they set their sights on a more significant prize: a contingent of 2000 British soldiers stranded on the island of Kheros in the Aegean. The clock was ticking, as the Germans were poised to launch a devastating attack on the beleaguered forces, and rescue by the Royal Navy seemed an impossible feat due to the formidable radar-directed guns emplaced on the nearby island of Navarone.

Despite valiant efforts to silence these guns through bombing sorties, Allied intelligence chief Commodore Jensen activated a team of daring saboteurs to infiltrate Navarone and destroy the artillery. Led by Major Roy Franklin (Anthony Quayle), this diverse group of operatives included Captain Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck), a seasoned veteran with unparalleled climbing skills; Andrea Stavrou (Anthony Quinn), a former Greek army colonel; Corporal Miller (David Niven), a university-educated explosives expert with a talent for chemistry; Spyros Pappadimos (James Darren), a Greek-American operative with intimate knowledge of Navarone’s terrain; and “Butcher” Brown (Stanley Baker), an engineer and deadly knife fighter.

Disguising themselves as weathered Greek fishermen, the team set sail across the treacherous Aegean Sea on a dilapidated boat. Their journey was cut short when they were intercepted by a German patrol vessel, which they dispatched with ruthless efficiency. As they continued their voyage, Mallory confided in Franklin about Andrea’s sworn vendetta against him, fueled by a tragic past that had seen the loss of his family.

A violent tempest then ravaged the seas, leaving their equipment in disarray and forcing them to abandon ship on the shores of Navarone. Under Mallory’s stalwart leadership, they scaled the seemingly impassable cliff face, only to discover that it was guarded after all. Corporal Miller proposed abandoning Franklin, whose injuries had become increasingly severe, suggesting he be left in enemy hands. However, Mallory, now in command of the mission, recognized that Franklin would be coerced into revealing their plans and ordered two operatives to carry the stricken soldier on a makeshift stretcher.

As the team navigated this treacherous landscape, they encountered a pair of local resistance workers, Maria (Irene Papas) and Anna (Gia Scala), who claimed to possess crucial knowledge about Navarone’s defenses. Despite Anna’s supposed silence following German torture, her presence would prove instrumental in their quest to neutralize the enemy guns and secure the stranded British soldiers’ fate.

As the commandos navigate the treacherous terrain of occupied Europe, they are relentlessly pursued by German forces, led by the cunning Lieutenant Muesel (Walter Gotell) and Hauptmann Sessler (George Mikell) of the SS. In a daring move, Andrea pretends to betray her comrades, allowing them to gain the upper hand against their captors in the town of Mandrakos. With the Germans momentarily stunned, the team makes a bold escape, donning German uniforms as they flee the scene and leaving Franklin behind to receive medical attention.

Meanwhile, Franklin’s injuries prompt Mallory to have him injected with Scopolamine, which ultimately leads to the unwitting surrender of crucial information. German units are subsequently redeployed away from the guns and toward the supposed invasion point, further complicating the mission.

As tensions simmer beneath the surface, Miller discovers that his explosives have been compromised, a development that sets him on a path of discovery. He soon uncovers the shocking truth: Anna, once thought to be mute and tortured by the Nazis, has been secretly working as an informer for the Germans in exchange for her release. Her pleas of coercion fall on deaf ears with Miller, still reeling from Mallory’s abandonment of Franklin. It is Maria who ultimately puts an end to Anna’s treachery.

As alliances are tested and loyalties are stretched to the breaking point, the team splits into smaller groups to tackle the remaining objectives. Mallory and Miller embark on a perilous mission to disable the heavily fortified gun emplacements, setting obvious explosives and hiding more beneath an elevator leading to the guns. Their daring escapade sets off an alarm, prompting the Germans to cut through the thick doors as Mallory and Miller make their escape by diving into the sea and commandeering a stolen boat.

Tragedy strikes when Pappadimos and Brown fall in battle, leaving Andrea gravely wounded. Mallory’s bravery is tested as he pulls his comrade into the boat, thus ending the blood feud between them. With the mission hanging precariously in the balance, the survivors must now navigate treacherous waters to ensure their escape and ultimate victory.

As the sun rises over the horizon, the Allied fleet arrives on cue, its destroyers emerging like a well-oiled machine from the fog of war. The Germans, anticipating their arrival, spring into action, hastily disarming the explosives planted on the guns to prepare for battle. But just as they’re about to unleash a barrage upon the unsuspecting enemy vessels, fate intervenes in the form of an unexpected twist: the elevator, slowly descending through the fortress’s crumbling infrastructure, triggers the hidden explosives, sending the guns and fortifications plummeting into a chaotic explosion that Franklin, confined to his hospital bed, is able to feel the reverberations of from afar. As the dust settles, the destroyers sound their horns in triumphant celebration, the ruined guns sinking slowly beneath the waves.

Meanwhile, Andrea, her heart now forever linked with Maria’s, makes the bold decision to return to Navarone alongside her newfound love, leaving behind the uncertainty and danger that once threatened to tear them asunder. Meanwhile, Mallory and Miller watch from the deck of a destroyer, surveying the aftermath of the destruction they’ve wrought, their eyes drinking in the devastation that lies before them like a twisted canvas of war’s cruel handiwork.
