Geraldine Leigh Chaplin is an American actress renowned for her long-spanning career, with roles in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German films. She is the eldest daughter of Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill, making her a grand-daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill. She started with dance and modeling before setting her sights on acting. Her English-language acting debut was her Golden Globe-nominated role as Tonya in David Lean's Doctor Zhivago (1965). She began her Broadway acting career in Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes in 1967. Geraldine portrayed ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti in Raúl Araiza's Nefertiti and Akhenaton (Nefertiti y Aquenatos) (1973), alongside Egyptian actor Salah Zulfikar.
Her second Golden Globe nomination was for Robert Altman's Nashville (1975). She bagged a BAFTA nomination for her role in Welcome to L.A. (1976). She received her third Golden Globe nomination for her performance as her grandmother, Hannah Chaplin, in the biopic Chaplin (1992). She did significant work in Spanish and French films. She was in a partnership with director Carlos Saura for 12 years, until 1979 starring in his films. In the City Without Limits (En la ciudad sin límites) (2002), won her a Goya Award. Her work in Spanish cinema was recognized when she received the gold medal from the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 2006. She starred in Red Land (Rosso Istria), an Italian film in 2018. In 2019, she featured the Duchess of Windsor in season 3 of the Netflix period drama series The Crown.
