Hugh Richard Bonniwell Williams (born 10 November 1963), known professionally as Hugh Bonneville, is an esteemed English actor with a career spanning from 1990 to the present day. He's best known for his masterful portrayals in the ITV historical drama series, Downton Abbey, the movies Notting Hill, Iris, The Monuments Men, and the Paddington films. His compelling performance as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey from 2010-2015, and reprised roles in the Downton Abbey feature films, earned him prestigious nominations including the Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards, plus three Screen Actors Guild Awards. His early roles included good-natured bumbling characters in Notting Hill and Mansfield Park, and later ventured into sinister roles, like the domineering Henleigh Grandcourt in Daniel Deronda, and the psychopathic killer James Lampton in The Commander series. He gained notoriety as Sir Christopher Wren in the docudrama Wren – The Man Who Built Britain and as Ian Fletcher in the award-winning BBC comedy series Twenty Twelve. Bonneville rounded out his performance versatility with stints as narrator, including the Channel 4 show The Hotel.
