What is the main infestation problem in the town?
In a town plagued by a troublesome rat infestation, Maurice steps forward to reveal the true nature of the chaos unfolding. As rats wreak havoc, the desperate townsfolk hire Keith, a charming piper, to rid them of their unwanted guests. Yet, what starts as a simple task soon escalates into a more intricate web of surprises as the rats display unexpected intelligence and even literacy. Teaming up with Maurice and Keith, the clever rodents begin devising a scheme to swindle the townspeople out of their hard-earned money.
This trio’s ambitious plans lead them to Bad Blintz, a town suffering from relentless food shortages, leaving perplexed rat-catchers in their wake. As they delve into the city’s winding tunnels, they soon realize that the usual rat population is mysteriously absent despite clear evidence of their activities. Their alarming find—a trap set for catching live rats—raises concerns, particularly for Darktan, their brave leader, who finds himself ensnared.
Meanwhile, Maurice gains access to the mayor’s lavish residence, where Keith encounters Malicia, the mayor’s sharp-witted daughter. Her keen insight is sparked by the sight of the tap-dancing rat, Sardines, and she quickly deduces that this trio is behind the recent wave of rodent-related troubles in surrounding areas. Seeking a mutually advantageous partnership, Malicia enlists their help in uncovering the mystery behind Bad Blintz’s dire food situation.
Their investigation leads them to the stronghold of the local rat-catchers, where they discover a hidden passageway that opens to an underground stash of food. Soon, they find Darktan and his crew emerging from the tunnels, clutching the trap they came across previously. Maurice cleverly concludes that the rat-catchers aim to capture these clever rats for entertainment, forcing them to compete against dogs in deadly contests, all while gamblers place bets on their demise. Fortunately, Sardines is rescued by his friends before becoming part of this grim spectacle.
As they plot against the rat-catchers, Maurice, Keith, and Malicia concoct a devious plan involving laxatives to taint the rat-catchers’ supplies. Their trick proves successful, leading the rat-catchers to unwittingly confess to creating a monstrous entity—a sinister fusion of eight rats whose tails merged into a single, sentient being capable of commanding others. In the ensuing chaos, Maurice makes a harrowing escape from the vengeful rat king while Keith and Malicia set off on a daring quest to find the legendary Pied Piper, the only one said to have the mystical flute that can defeat such a creature.
As events unfold, the Big Boss is ultimately unveiled as the rat king, concealed as a human amid a heap of discarded clothing. Responding to this threat, the group’s spiritual guide, Danger Beans, bravely ventures to rescue Peaches, a captive rat taken by this malevolent force. In a thrilling turn, Maurice appears on the scene, confronting the rat king with the ill-gotten wealth they procured earlier, freeing himself and the two captured rodents.
As Keith and Malicia search the woods for the Pied Piper’s coveted flute, their attempt to snatch it is thwarted when the piper awakens and threatens to incinerate them. A well-timed distraction from a wind-up toy mouse, taken earlier from the mysterious Darktan, allows them to escape with the flute intact.
An explosive showdown ensues at the rat-catchers’ office as Maurice faces off against the vile rat king again. With sharp wit and strategy, he uses their stolen loot to create an escape route, reuniting with Keith and Malicia as they continue their mission to end the rat king’s reign of terror. As they flee from the city, the rat king dispatches an army of rats at them, amplifying its power. In a frantic bid for freedom, Maurice seeks out Keith and Malicia, who face challenges in evading the rat king’s control. Undeterred, Keith finally refines his flute-playing skills, weaving an enchanting melody that pulls the rats away from the rat king’s hypnotic hold, leaving only its formidable presence in suspense.
In a heart-stopping climax, the rat king unleashes a blast of dark energy, freezing everyone in place, yet Danger Beans manages to break free against all odds. In a shocking twist, the rat king snaps his neck, gravely injuring Danger Beans, who implores Maurice to reclaim his feline identity. Harnessing a surge of instinct, Maurice bravely confronts and eliminates the rat king, ultimately sacrificing himself in the process. Just as Death and the Death of Rats arrive to claim their due, Maurice makes one last act of heroism, trading a life for Danger Beans’, ensuring their survival.
With the rat king defeated and food supplies replenished, the town and its newfound rodent residents cultivate an unusual yet harmonious alliance. The rats are granted the right to stay in a central area of town, transforming Bad Blintz into a beloved tourist spot filled with endearing talking rats—Keith even assumes the role of the town’s official piper.
As the credits roll, a touching tribute to Terry Pratchett pays homage to the inspiration behind this captivating adventure.
