Jason Nelson Robards Jr. (July 26, 1922 – December 26, 2000) was an acclaimed American actor distinguished for his stage and screen performances. He is particularly noted for his interpretation of the works of playwright Eugene O'Neill. Throughout his career, Robards scooped numerous awards, becoming one of the 24 performers to attain the Triple Crown of Acting with wins for two Academy Awards, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award. His contributions to the arts were further recognized with induction into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979, receiving the National Medal of Arts in 1997, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 1999.

Robards commenced his acting voyage in theatre, debuting on Broadway with James Tyrone Jr.'s character in the 1956 revival of the Eugene O'Neill play Long Day's Journey into Night. His performance earned him a Theatre World Award. He made his entrance in feature films with The Journey (1959), and subsequently garnered two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor with his roles in All the President's Men (1976), and Julia (1977). Noteworthy in his other works are his portrayals in Long Day's Journey into Night (1962), A Thousand Clowns (1965), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Parenthood (1989), Philadelphia (1993), Enemy of the State (1998), and Magnolia (1999). He also scored a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie with his role in Inherit the Wind (1988).
