Michael Carlyle Hall, born February 1, 1971, is an accomplished American actor, singer, and songwriter. He gained recognition for his roles as David Fisher in the HBO drama series 'Six Feet Under' (2001–2005), and as the titular character in the Showtime series 'Dexter' (2006–2013). These acclaimed performances earned him a Golden Globe Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Hall reprised his role for the miniseries revival 'Dexter: New Blood' in 2021–2022.
Hall was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1996. He began his acting career on Broadway, appearing in various shows throughout the 1990s. His film roles include works like 'Paycheck' (2003), 'Gamer' (2009), and 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (2019). He has been the lead singer for the New York City based band Princess Goes and has released three records since 2018. He juggles his career between acting in films, series, theater, and engaging actively in the music scene.
Hall's professional acting career launched in the theater, with appearances in several productions including Macbeth, Cymbeline, and Corpus Christi among others. He performed the role of Paris Singer in a Sondheim workshop production and had roles in multiple Shakespearean plays. Hall's film and TV work expanded rapidly in the 2000s, notably with his well-received role in 'Six Feet Under'. He also portrayed a psychopathic blood-spatter analyst in the popular 'Dexter' series, garnering numerous nominations and awards.
In juxtaposition to his portfolio of acting roles, Hall also actively pursued music, performing in 'Hedwig and The Angry Inch' and forming a band, Princess Goes, which continues to write and perform music. Hall married actress Amy Spanger in 2002, followed by his 'Dexter' co-star Jennifer Carpenter in 2007, and most recently, Morgan Macgregor in 2016. He has worked with several organizations including Somalia Aid Society's 'Feed the People' campaign, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's 'Light the Night Walk' fundraising campaign, and more.
