Plot Summary

As the curtain rises on this cinematic tale, we find ourselves in the midst of a high-stakes trivia competition at a bustling bar. Two teams, each comprising individuals with a fierce competitive spirit, are pitted against one another. Max (Jason Bateman), an unyielding champion, and Annie (Rachel McAdams), a cunning strategist, lock horns when they simultaneously arrive at the correct answer to a crucial question. This chance encounter sets in motion a chain of events that will forever alter their lives.

As the days turn into weeks, Max and Annie’s friendship blossoms into romance. Their social gatherings, initially centered around game nights, gradually give way to a deeper emotional connection. In a moment of tender vulnerability, Max proposes to Annie during a spirited round of Charades, and they eventually tie the knot. The newlyweds’ love is put to the test as they face off against one another in a high-energy dance competition.

Fast-forward to the present day, and we find ourselves in the midst of a different kind of challenge for Max and Annie. They are struggling to conceive, a problem that Dr. Chin (Camille Chen) attributes to Max’s growing stress levels. Annie suspects that her husband’s anxiety stems from his older brother Brooks’ (Kyle Chandler) impending visit. This development has always left Max feeling overshadowed by his sibling’s achievements.

As the evening approaches, Max and Annie return home to prepare for their game night, a ritual they’ve shared with friends for years. En route, they encounter their eccentric neighbor Gary (Jesse Plemons), a solitary figure who was once a regular at their gatherings but has since been replaced by his loyal canine companion Bastian. The couple is keen to keep the evening’s festivities private and declines Gary’s invitation to join in.

As the evening wears on, Max and Annie’s friends begin to trickle in, their presence marked by the subtle sound of windows creaking open. Kevin (Lamorne Morris) and Michelle (Kylie Bunbury), the quintessential childhood sweethearts, arrive alongside Ryan (Billy Magnussen) and his latest conquest - a stunning woman whose intellectual prowess is noticeably absent. The group’s dynamic is quickly established as they poke fun at Ryan’s propensity for bringing dim-witted companions to their gatherings. Unbeknownst to Max and Annie, however, this particular game night has taken an unexpected turn. Brooks, the perpetual thorn in their side, arrives in a sleek Stingray (Max’s coveted dream car), his presence serving as a not-so-subtle reminder that he’s always one step ahead of the game.

As Brooks joins the fray, he hijacks the evening with a cringe-worthy tale from Max’s childhood, regaling the party with an embarrassing anecdote about the latter’s misguided attempt to blow himself up. This sudden shift in focus sends Max reeling, ultimately leading to a crushing defeat at the hands of his nemesis. Brooks then issues an invitation to the group, inviting them to converge on his opulent abode for the next game night. Annie’s ire is piqued as she perceives Brooks’ actions as a deliberate attempt to sabotage their chances of conceiving, prompting her to rally behind Max in a bid to take down their rival.

Weeks later, the gang converges on Brooks’ lavish estate, with Ryan sporting a new companion - Sarah (Sharon Horgan) - who boasts an intellect far surpassing that of his previous conquests. As the evening’s festivities kick off with a raucous drinking game of “Never Have I Ever”, Michelle’s candid admission about her past sends Kevin’s insecurities spiraling out of control. The stage is set for another heated showdown between Max, Annie, and Brooks - a battle for dominance that will leave only one partygoer standing triumphant.

The stakes escalate when Agent Henderson (Jeffrey Wright) bursts into the house, bearing FBI dossiers that will guide the group on a perilous hunt for kidnappers. The tantalizing prospect of claiming Brooks’s prized Stingray further fuels Max’s competitive drive. However, two ruthless abductors crash the party, brutally attacking Brooks and rendering Henderson unconscious. As chaos erupts throughout the house, Brooks valiantly fights off the intruders, his efforts mistaken by the gang for a game-related scenario. The tables turn when Brooks is taken away, leaving the group to decipher the cryptic clues scattered across the dossiers.

Meanwhile, Sarah manages to establish communication with the masterminds behind the game, thereby securing an advantage for herself and Ryan. Meanwhile, Kevin and Michelle find themselves trapped in Brooks’s office, abandoned by Ryan as they had stumbled upon a crucial clue. In a desperate bid to escape, Kevin attempts to navigate through the ceiling above a pile of boxes, only to topple over and inadvertently open the door.

As the situation grows more dire, Max and Annie are drawn to a bar, where Annie unwittingly seizes a real firearm that fell from Brooks’s pocket during their earlier struggle. Unbeknownst to her, she now holds the key to survival. Upon arriving at the bar, they encounter Brooks in a backroom, holding the would-be kidnappers at gunpoint. However, it soon becomes apparent that none of this is part of the game; Brooks is instead fighting for his life against genuine villains.

As tensions simmer, Annie’s inexperience with firearms leads to a catastrophic misfire, striking Max and causing severe bleeding. The bad guys begin to breach the bar, prompting Max and Annie to grab Brooks and make a hasty exit. En route, Brooks confesses that his Wall Street success was merely a ruse, having actually amassed wealth through illicit activities – including pilfering a prized Fabergé egg from the notorious Bulgarian and selling it to Marlon Freeman.

As Max and Annie speed away from their pursuers, they are unaware that Brooks has sacrificed himself to ensure their escape. The villains close in on their fleeing vehicle, setting the stage for a heart-pumping showdown.

As Ryan and Sarah arrive at the publishing company, they’re suddenly face to face with Glenda (Chelsea Peretti), fresh from a murder mystery party where she played the role of corpse. Her startling presence forces them to negotiate for the next clue, while unwittingly foreshadowing the twists to come. Meanwhile, the real-life actors playing kidnappers arrive at Brooks’s house, prompting Kevin and Michelle to realize that everything they thought was just a game had actually been a chilling reality. This epiphany sparks a chain reaction, as they quickly get in touch with Ryan and Sarah, bringing the two groups together.

Back at Max and Annie’s makeshift infirmary, Annie tends to Max’s gunshot wound, only to discover that the bullet has long since exited his arm. Her well-intentioned ministrations lead to a series of awkward moments, as they both gag in unison at the sight of Max’s bloodied bone. As the truth sets in, they’re forced to regroup and refocus.

The group converges on Gary’s house, where he’s a cop with access to the computer and information Brooks had shared under his various aliases. However, their search for answers is hindered by an unexpected game of Jenga, which Max leaves to join Gary in his office. As Max delves into the computer, he uncovers a treasure trove of memorabilia from Gary’s marriage to Debbie, including photos of Marlon Freeman, who’s actually wealthy businessman Donald Anderton (Danny Huston). Meanwhile, The Bulgarian remains at large, and Bastian wanders into the room as Max’s bloodied arm drips onto the carpet – and ultimately, onto his dog. Max’s hasty attempts to clean up only exacerbate the situation, prompting him to round up the group for an immediate exit.

Just as tensions are building, the kidnappers make contact with Max, issuing a chilling ultimatum: if they don’t receive the egg within the hour, they’ll kill Brooks. The group converges on Anderton’s home, where they find the elusive egg amidst a subterranean fight club hosted by Anderton himself. As Ryan and Sarah watch from the sidelines, the others search for the egg, unaware of the surprises awaiting them.

In the midst of this chaos, Michelle finally opens up to Kevin about her infamous celebrity encounter – or so she claims. With a tantalizing tale and even a photo as proof, she recounts the story of her night with none other than Denzel Washington. However, Kevin is forced to burst her bubble, revealing that it was actually a lookalike who won her affections. Meanwhile, Max and Annie’s conversation turns to their future plans – or lack thereof – as they grapple with the prospect of parenthood. For Max, this raises questions about his own identity and sense of self, which he seems reluctant to confront.

As Ryan lays eyes on the egg within the vault, his instincts kick in and he swiftly seizes the opportunity to grab it amidst the chaos of the intense fight unfolding before him. However, his actions don’t go unnoticed, and he’s forced to make a hasty retreat with the precious cargo. Anderton’s guards hotly pursue the group as they frantically navigate the labyrinthine house, but ultimately manage to wrestle the egg from their grasp.

Their next stop is the bridge, where they’re expected to rendezvous with the kidnappers. However, Kevin’s abrupt braking causes the egg to go flying, shattering against the dashboard in a devastating display of calamity. As they survey the wreckage, it becomes clear that something more substantial was nestled within - a list of individuals hiding in witness protection. The group approaches the kidnappers, armed with the incriminating paper, and is promptly ordered to take cover on the ground.

As the kidnappers confer with their mysterious employer, Brooks takes a moment to offer a heartfelt apology to Max for his past transgressions and deception. He also reveals that the keys to the coveted Stingray are conveniently nestled in Max’s jacket pocket. The kidnappers, however, have other plans, deciding to execute the group en masse.

Just as all hope seems lost, Gary arrives on the scene, gun blazing, having deduced something was amiss with the group’s behavior throughout the night. His timely intervention proves short-lived, as one of the kidnappers returns fire, striking Gary down. Max and Annie spring into action to aid their fallen comrade, only to discover a hidden blood capsule in his mouth.

Gary’s confession reveals that he orchestrated the entire operation to reclaim control over Brooks’s game night, having been excluded from the proceedings for too long. When the group hands him the list of protected witnesses, he feigns ignorance about the contents. The Bulgarian (Michael C. Hall) suddenly materializes with his imposing bodyguard, terminating Gary’s pretenses with a hail of bullets.

In a last-ditch effort to salvage the situation, Brooks swallows the incriminating list, prompting the kidnappers to whisk him away aboard their awaiting jet. Max and Annie make a break for Brooks’s residence, pilfering the Stingray in the process and racing towards the aircraft.

As the jet prepares for takeoff, Max seizes the opportunity to sabotage its wheels, causing it to plummet from the skies. The Bulgarian’s hulking bodyguard gives chase, hotly pursued by Annie as she attempts to distract him while Max sets out to rescue Brooks. In a frenzied battle, the turbines roar to life, drawing in the guard and reducing him to mere shreds.

Annie seizes the initiative, dispatching The Bulgarian with a well-placed fire extinguisher blast, freeing Brooks from his captors’ clutches. As they make their escape, it becomes clear that this was no part of the game - just sheer desperation.

As the months tick by, the group of friends converges at Brooks’ abode for an evening of revelry and camaraderie, his house arrest sentence serving as the unlikely catalyst. With nothing but time on his hands, Brooks has managed to monetize his predicament in a rather unorthodox manner, peddling the WitSec list on the black market for a staggering $3 million and offering targeted tips to those on the list at a handsome $20,000 per person. The evening’s festivities are further bolstered by Gary’s unexpected return, though it’s clear that his gaming skills remain woefully underdeveloped. As the night wears on, Pictionary becomes the game of choice, and Annie seizes the opportunity to share the life-altering news with Max: she’s expecting. The couple’s heartfelt embrace is met with warm congratulations from their friends, providing a poignant backdrop for the evening’s developments.

Meanwhile, outside the walls of Brooks’ home, two masked individuals clad in black are busy preparing to infiltrate the gathering. Little do they know, however, that Gary has been secretly plotting to hijack the night, his scheme unfolding like a perfectly timed trap. As the credits roll, we’re treated to a meticulous breakdown of Gary’s meticulously planned heist.

In the aftermath of the film’s main event, we find ourselves in the midst of a tender moment as Michelle’s former target, the man she once mistook for Denzel, strikes up a connection with a charming new acquaintance - Debbie. The scene sets the stage for a potential future narrative, leaving viewers eager to see where this budding relationship might lead.
