What's After the Movie
Johan Philip "Pilou" Asbæk, born 2 March 1982, is a Danish actor known internationally for portraying characters that have left a mark in the world of television and cinema. Asbæk came into limelight for his role as the troubled spin doctor Kasper Juul in the Danish TV political drama Borgen and as Euron Greyjoy in the worldwide popular series Game of Thrones. Born in Copenhagen to gallery owners, Asbæk developed an early interest in drama and pursued his passion by graduating from Denmark's Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2008. Beyond television, Asbæk has exhibited his acting prowess in a series of films, beginning with the harrowing prison experience portrayed in the film R in 2011. Over the next decade, Asbæk took on a variety of roles, showcasing his acting versatility. In 2012, he transformed himself physically for role in Tobias Lindholm's film A Hijacking. In 2014, he starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, and in 2015, he collaborated once again with Tobias Lindholm in A War. Despite his busy career, Asbæk has not forgotten his home country, landing roles in several Danish films, including Silent Heart and Sex, Drugs & Taxation. His character as Batou in Ghost in the Shell in 2017, Captain Wafner in Overlord in 2018, and as murder investigator Anders Olsen in Murderous Trance have further ingrained him in the audience's minds. In 2021, he joined the cast of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for the role of Kordax and Richard Straker in Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot. Asbæk will also be voicing Mario in the Danish dub of 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
