Robert Newton

Robert Newton, also known as Robert Guy Newton, was born on 1 June 1905 in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England. He was an appealing English actor known for being rendered as a role model by notable figures such as actor Oliver Reed and Who's drummer Keith Moon. Newton commenced his acting career in the theater in the 1920s and had his first appearance in numerous plays on the West End, one of which includes Bitter Sweet by Noël Coward. In 1939, he played Horatio in Hamlet at the Old Vic theater alongside Laurence Olivier's Prince Hamlet. After serving in the Royal Navy during WWII, he starred in This Happy Breed (1944) and in Olivier's version of Henry V (1944). Because of such performances, he was voted the 10th most popular British film star in 1944. Newton became memorable for his representation of Long John Silver in the 1950 RKO-Disney British adaptation of Treasure Island. His last screen appearance was in Around the World in 80 Days (1956). After a life dominated by chronic alcoholism, Robert Newton died on 25 March 1956 at age 50 in Beverly Hills, California.
