Stephanie Sy

Stephanie Sy, born January 16, 1977, is an accomplished American television news anchor and reporter prominent for her work with PBS NewsHour. Of Chinese heritage, she nurtured her journalism skills in Southern California before graduating cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999, with majors in international relations and environmental studies. Her early career saw her reporting and filling in as an anchor for WBTW in South Carolina between 1999 and 2001. She later moved to Virginia, reporting military news for WTKR. Her impressive reporting from Iraq during the 2003 conflict played a crucial role in her recruitment by ABC News. Sy subsequently reported from London for ABC NewsOne before becoming ABC’s Asia Correspondent based in Beijing in 2007. She was transferred to New York in 2009, where she remained until her departure from ABC in 2012.

Beyond ABC, Stephanie Sy held a senior editor and correspondent position at Everyday Health between 2012 and 2013. She subsequently joined Al Jazeera America, anchoring multiple newscasts and conducting intermittent interviews for Talk to Al Jazeera until 2016. She also freelanced for Yahoo News, CBSN, CNN, and CNN International. While contributing as a freelance journalist, she also began work with PBS NewsHour Weekend. In 2019, she attained the role of anchor for PBS NewsHour West based in Arizona State University and gained the position of a correspondent for PBS NewsHour. On a personal level, Sy is married to David Jensen Ariosto, a supervising producer for NPR's All Things Considered. They married on June 17, 2017. She also has a daughter from her previous marriage. Sy remains an active member of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.
