**Anthony Minghella**, CBE (6 January 1954 – 18 March 2008) was a British film director, playwright, and screenwriter. Notable for his creative influence and unique style of storytelling, he made his mark both in film and theatre. His family were known on the Isle of Wight, where they ran a café and have run an eponymous business making and selling Italian-style ice cream since the 1950s. Minghella attended St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, Ryde, Sandown Grammar School, and St John's College, Portsmouth. His debut work was a stage adaptation of Gabriel Josipovici's Mobius the Stripper (1975) and it was his Whale Music (1985) that brought him notice. His career reached new heights when he directed the highly acclaimed films like Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990), The English Patient (1996), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and Cold Mountain (2003). He ventured into television with ITV detective drama Inspector Morse and ITV drama Boon. In honour of Beckett's 100th birthday celebration, he returned to radio with Eyes Down Looking (2006). Remembered fondly for his creative genius, Minghella carved a niche in the cinematic and theatrical world with his provocative storytelling and directorial expertise.
