Charles Malcolm McDowell, known as Charlie McDowell, is an established American film director and screenwriter. He was born on July 10, 1983, in Los Angeles, California to renowned English actor Malcolm McDowell and popular American actress Mary Steenburgen. His stepfather is the actor Ted Danson, who married Steenburgen in 1995. McDowell first emerged in the film industry with his directorial debut, the romantic thriller The One I Love, in 2014. Following this, he wrote and directed the Netflix drama films The Discovery (2017) and Windfall (2022). His unique style and storytelling abilities have secured his position in the industry. In addition to directing, McDowell's Twitter presence has also attracted attention. In 2011, Time described his Twitter feed as 'one of the most hilarious Twitter feeds out there,' which resulted in a book publication courtesy of Three Rivers Press in 2013. His book, Dear Girls Above Me, is based on his entertaining Twitter narrative. Additionally, McDowell directed the first and last episodes of the Showtime series On Becoming a God in Central Florida, earning him executive producer credits. McDowell continues to push his professional boundaries, his next film Gilded Rage explores a notorious murder case. In his personal life, McDowell has been linked to actress Emilia Clarke and is currently married to actress Lily Collins.
