Hlynur Pálmason is a renowned Icelandic film director, screenwriter, and visual artist, known especially for his distinct narrative style and flow of films. He was born in 1984 in the city of Höfn í Hornafirði, Iceland. Having a keen interest in films and visual arts, Pálmason chose to study film at the National Film School of Denmark in Copenhagen, from where he graduated in 2013. After spending a decade in Denmark, he returned to his hometown Höfn. Throughout his career, which started in 2012, Pálmason has expressed that he values the narrative style and flow of films more than the actual plotline.
His debut feature film, Winter Brothers (Vinterbrødre), shot in Denmark, made its first appearance at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in 2017. This film won several accolades, including the Bodil and Robert Awards for Best Danish Film. His second feature film, A White, White Day (Hvítur, Hvítur Dagur), filmed in Iceland, enjoyed the same success and was even selected to screen at the Critics' Week section at Cannes in 2019. His 2022 film, Godland (Vanskabte Land), premiered at Cannes and won many significant awards, including Gold Hugo for Best Feature Film at the Chicago Film Festival. He was recognized for his exceptional direction skills and won Director of the Year at Iceland's 2023 Edda Awards.
