In the gritty metropolis of Detroit, 1995, Jimmy Smith (Eminem) is a struggling rapper on the cusp of making it big. Despite the encouragement of his friends, including Future, Cheddar Bob, Sol George (Omar Benson Miller), and Iz (De'Angelo Wilson), Jimmy's self-doubt gets the better of him. A crushing defeat at the Shelter, a local venue where he performs under the stage name B-Rabbit, leaves him reeling from the humiliation. The African American rappers from "Leaders of the Free World" take aim at his white trash background, branding him as privileged and disconnected from reality.

As Jimmy navigates this dark period in his life, he finds himself back in Warren, Michigan, living with his troubled mother, Stephanie (Kim Basinger), her abusive boyfriend Greg (Michael Shannon), and his sister Lily (Chloe Greenfield). Fired from his job at the pizza place for being perpetually late, Jimmy is forced to move in with his family until he can secure a new job and make ends meet.

Jimmy's focus on kickstarting his music career remains unwavering, but every door seems closed. Freshly ended his relationship with Janeane (Taryn Manning) after she claimed pregnancy, Jimmy begins a new romance with Alex (Brittany Murphy), whom he meets at the factory where they both work. As he tries to find his footing in life, Jimmy comes to realize that little has changed since high school, where Greg and Future were classmates.

Initially, Jimmy views himself as a victim of circumstance, blaming others for his problems. However, as time passes, he begins to take responsibility for the direction of his life. This newfound awareness is put to the test when Stephanie discovers an eviction notice while Jimmy is getting ready for work. With Greg expected to receive a hefty settlement check from an accident, Stephanie hopes to use the money to move into a new house with Lily. She enlists Jimmy's help in keeping the notice hidden from Greg, hoping to avoid freaking him out and jeopardizing their plans.

Jimmy's transformation from slacker to dedicated employee becomes palpable to his supervisor Manny at the factory. Initially, Manny laughs off Jimmy's request for extra shifts, citing his history of tardiness, but as Jimmy's attitude and performance improve, he earns those extra hours. Meanwhile, Jimmy's friendship with Wink, who has ties to a record label promoter, gains momentum. Wink promises Jimmy a spot on the deal, but his friend Future remains skeptical, viewing Wink as a bad influence.

As Jimmy navigates this new dynamic, he introduces Wink to Alex. However, their camaraderie is short-lived, as Jimmy soon discovers that Wink secretly works with the rival rap group "Leaders of the Free World", led by Papa Doc, who has a personal vendetta against Jimmy. The tension culminates in a tense confrontation where Papa Doc pulls out a gun, only to be restrained by his entourage.

Jimmy's world is further turned upside down when he and his friends clash with the Leaders of the Free World in a violent brawl. Cheddar Bob, Jimmy's friend, accidentally shoots himself in the leg while brandishing a firearm, leading to a chaotic scene that ends with him being rushed to the hospital.

In a surprising turn of events, Jimmy uses his freestyle rapping skills to defend Paul from insults hurled by a coworker during lunch. This newfound confidence impresses Alex, who reciprocates Jimmy's feelings in a passionate encounter.

However, Jimmy's personal life is rocked when Greg discovers Stephanie's eviction notice and confronts her. The ensuing fight prompts Jimmy to punch Greg, leading to their estrangement. Meanwhile, Jimmy's relationship with Alex begins to unravel when he catches Wink having sex with her. Enraged, Jimmy beats up Wink, causing him to officially align himself with Jimmy's sworn enemies – the Leaders of the Free World.

The consequences of Jimmy's actions are devastating: Wink and the gang jump him outside his mother's trailer, but just as things escalate, Wink intervenes, stopping one member from pulling a trigger and allowing them to depart.

As the group departs, leaving Jimmy isolated once more, a surprise arrival brings solace in the form of his mother's bingo winnings, amassing a substantial $3,200 that would stave off eviction. However, this newfound financial security is short-lived, as an argument erupts between Jimmy and Stephanie on the porch, culminating in her unceremonious eviction of him from their humble abode.

In stark contrast to his recent woes, Jimmy's friends hail him as a rap sensation, with Future (Mekhi Phifer) prodding him to exact revenge by taking part in the next rap battle against the formidable Leaders of the Free World. Complicating matters, Jimmy's late-night work schedule directly conflicts with the upcoming tournament. The sudden appearance of Alex serves as a catalyst for Jimmy to reconsider his competitive prospects.

In a surprising turn of events, Paul (Craig Chandler), Jimmy's gay co-worker who he had earlier stood up for, offers to cover his shift, allowing him to participate in the battle. This development takes on added significance, given the tournament's triple-threat format, which pits Jimmy against a different member of the Leaders of the Free World gang in each round.

As the battles unfold, Jimmy faces off against a series of formidable opponents, emerging victorious from the first two rounds with an increasingly impressive display of freestyle rapping prowess. However, the stakes escalate dramatically in the final confrontation, as Jimmy is pitted against Papa Doc (Anthony Mackie), the tournament's most feared battler.

Jimmy is acutely aware that Doc possesses intimate knowledge of his vulnerabilities, prompting him to proactively address these weaknesses through a masterful display of freestyle rap. In a stunning revelation, Jimmy unapologetically shares his humble white trash roots and the various humiliations inflicted upon him by the Free World gang, before leveraging the difficulties he has faced as a springboard to expose Papa Doc's own privileged upbringing.

Doc, whose real name is Clarence, has been masquerading as a thug, despite having attended Cranbrook, a prestigious private high school, and growing up in a stable two-parent household. With no retort forthcoming from Doc, the microphone is handed back to Future, securing Jimmy's victory.

As Jimmy exits the venue, he receives an invitation from Future to celebrate his triumph and consider hosting battles at The Shelter. However, Jimmy declines, opting instead to return to work, feeling more confident than ever about his future prospects.
