When a prank on a fellow high-school student takes a wrong turn, the popular yet rebellious Landon Carter (Shane West) finds himself facing expulsion. His penalty requires him to engage in various after-school activities, such as tutoring underprivileged children and participating in the drama club’s spring musical. This unexpected turn of events forces him to interact with the reserved, bookish Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), a girl he has known over the years but rarely spoken to. Although they occupy the same physical space, their vastly different social standings seem to create an insurmountable distance between them.
Faced with difficulty memorizing his lines for the play, Landon seeks Jamie’s assistance. She agrees to help him under the condition that he promises not to fall for her. Landon chuckles at this odd request, convinced Jamie is the least likely candidate for his affections. After all, he has no shortage of beautiful, popular girls vying for his attention, and Jamie, with her shy nature and outdated style, certainly doesn’t fit that mold.
As they practice together at her home, a fragile friendship blossoms between the two. Landon discovers that Jamie has a bucket list filled with aspirations she’d like to accomplish, including getting a tattoo and experiencing the sensation of being in two places simultaneously. One day, Jamie approaches him at his locker, asking if they can still meet for practice. However, as he smirks and retorts, “In your dreams,” his friends burst into laughter, leaving Jamie feeling humiliated and hurt. That afternoon, hoping to salvage the situation, Landon arrives at Jamie’s house, but she initially refuses to let him in. When she finally opens the door, she sarcastically suggests they can be “secret friends,” then slams the door when he agrees.
Eventually, Landon manages to learn his lines independently, and during the performance, Jamie captivates both him and the audience with her stunning beauty and remarkable voice. In a spontaneous moment during the play, Landon kisses Jamie, an impulsive act not scripted, but she pushes him away repeatedly. After an unkind joke from Landon’s friends directed at Jamie, he becomes enraged, punching Dean for the mean prank. This incident prompts Jamie to reconsider, and she accepts his invitation to spend time together.
Their relationship blossoms as they go out on dates, with Landon experiencing the joys of a sincere connection. He even sets out to help her fulfill her dreams from her wish list, including a memorable moment when he takes her to a state line.
