Close friends Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) and Al Yackey (John Goodman) risk their lives battling intense wildfires from the cockpit of classic water bombers dating back to World War II. Pete is known for his daredevil attitude, which increasingly worries his girlfriend, Dorinda Durston (Holly Hunter), as well as Al. After taking his aircraft to the limit by running out of fuel during one risky retardant drop, both Dorinda and Al voice their concerns about his reckless behavior. Al informs Pete of the impending establishment of an air attack training base in Flat Rock, Colorado, which will be searching for a commanding officer. However, fueled by his passion for flying and fighting fires, Pete dismisses the idea of settling down into a desk job.

That very night, Dorinda shares her deepest feelings with Pete, who hesitantly agrees to consider the job if it means they can stay together. Just as he resolves to make this change, duty calls him back to fight an active blaze. During a perilous fight against the flames, Al’s plane collides with a burning tree, igniting his engine. In a split second, Pete makes a steep dive to release retardant, extinguishing the fire in Al’s aircraft. Tragically, while pulling up from this dangerous maneuver, Pete’s own plane is consumed by flames and explodes.

As Dorinda and Al mourn their loss, Pete finds himself wandering through a charred forest in the aftermath of a fire, where he meets a mysterious woman named Hap (Audrey Hepburn) dressed in white. To his astonishment, she informs him that he is dead but promises that his spirit will be sent back to guide a rookie pilot. The living, she explains, will be able to hear his thoughts resonating within them. Six months posthumously, Pete observes his new mentee, Ted Baker (Brad Johnson), at the training base in Flat Rock and is pleasantly surprised to see Al occupying the commander’s office. Although Al is hesitant to accept Ted, whose background raises concerns, Pete’s strong encouragement resonates in Al’s thoughts, convincing him to give Ted a chance.

However, Al’s students, including Ted, display a shocking lack of preparation for airborne firefighting—especially Ted, who clumsily douses Al and his assistant with retardant due to Pete’s guidance. Upset, Al orders Ted to leave before making his way to San Diego, where he discovers Dorinda has been working as an air traffic controller and still struggles with her feelings for Pete. Hoping to reconnect, Al brings her back to Flat Rock, where she settles into a home at the airfield’s edge.

Despite Al’s warnings, Ted persists in returning to Flat Rock, determined to earn his air attack certification; a malfunctioning tractor leads him directly to Dorinda’s home. Here, Pete speaks to Dorinda and finds comfort in her unwavering love for him. As Pete continues to mentor Ted, he watches with disappointment as Ted slowly wins over Dorinda’s affection. He encounters Hap again, who advises him that he is wasting his spirit by clinging to Dorinda and interfering in her life with Ted.

During the season’s first major wildfire, Ted demonstrates the incredible skills he has honed under Pete’s influence. When a distress call emerges from a team of ground firefighters, Dorinda, refusing to let another loved one fly to danger, commandeers Ted’s plane in a desperate bid to lead the rescue mission herself, despite Pete’s attempts to persuade her otherwise. As she presses into the chaos, Pete shifts his approach and guides her through a treacherous flight amidst the towering inferno, helping her secure a timely drop of retardant, allowing the firefighters to escape to safety.

In a heartfelt moment, Pete finally shares all that he was unable to express while alive, affirming his love for Dorinda. However, an emergency landing goes awry, resulting in the plane’s sinking. Facing her imminent fate underwater, Dorinda is on the brink of surrender when Pete appears before her, takes her hand, and pulls her back to the surface. Back at the airfield, Al and Ted rush to embrace Dorinda just as Pete gently bids her farewell, ready to release her into her new life. As Dorinda and Ted share a loving hug, Pete walks away, securing his eternal peace.
