Check out what happened in Anastasia!

In the opulent city of St Petersburg, Russia, 1916 marks a momentous occasion - the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty's reign. Amidst the lavish ball celebrating this milestone, the Dowager Empress Marie (Angela Lansbury), mother of Tsar Nicolas, revels in the company of her beloved granddaughter Anastasia (Kirsten Dunst). As Marie prepares to depart for Paris, she gifts Anastasia a delicate music box, its melody etched in their collective memory. The wind-up key, adorned with the phrase "Together in Paris," serves as a poignant reminder of their bond.

However, the merriment is short-lived, as the enigmatic Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd) appears, claiming to be Nicolas' trusted confidant. Instead, he is branded a traitor and ordered out of the Palace. Seething with resentment, Rasputin exacts a chilling vow: within fortnight, his family will perish, and all Romanovs will meet their demise.

As Rasputin's malevolent powers grow, he orchestrates chaos among the people, who soon turn on the Palace, breaching its gates. Marie and Anastasia find themselves trapped in a room as the turmoil unfolds. With the aid of a resourceful servant boy, they escape through a hidden passage. As they attempt to cross the frozen river on the Palace grounds, Rasputin confronts them, but his hubris is his downfall. The ice beneath him gives way, and he plunges into the icy waters, leaving behind his magical reliquary and a befuddled little fruitbat named Bartok (Hank Azaria).

Ten years following the revolution, whispers circulate that Anastasia may still be alive. Marie, now residing in Paris, offers a substantial reward for her granddaughter's return. In St Petersburg, conman Dimitri (John Cusack) and his accomplice Vlad (Kelsey Grammer) concoct a scheme to find a woman to impersonate Anastasia, hoping to fleece Marie of the reward.

As their search unfolds, they encounter a bevy of women, each with her own secrets and motivations. Amidst this sea of uncertainty, the true fate of Anastasia hangs in the balance, as those seeking to claim her identity - or uncover the truth about her disappearance - navigate the treacherous landscape of deception and desire.

As Anya (formerly Anastasia) navigates her life in an orphanage, she finds herself torn between two paths: one leading to the fish factory and another to St. Petersburg. Fate intervenes as a curious puppy appears, seemingly guiding her towards the city's grandeur. Once there, Anya attempts to board a train to Paris but is thwarted by bureaucratic hurdles. A mysterious woman suggests seeking out Dimitri, who allegedly possesses the means to facilitate her journey. With little hesitation, Anya sets out to find him at the abandoned Royal Palace.

Upon entering the palace, she's struck by an onslaught of memories as she stumbles upon the grand ballroom, now a relic of forgotten times. Suddenly, Dimitri and Vlad materialize before her, their eyes fixed on Anya with an air of calculated purpose. Dimitri perceives her as the perfect pawn for his plans and convinces her to accompany him and Vlad to meet the Dowager Empress, claiming it may hold the key to unlocking her true identity.

As they embark on this new adventure, a clandestine figure lurks in the shadows - Bartok, who has been hiding in a secluded alcove of the ballroom. He's drawn to Rasputin's reliquary, which begins to radiate an otherworldly glow. As he touches it, he finds himself transported to limbo, where Rasputin has been trapped for a decade. With his newfound powers, Rasputin conjures minions to eliminate Anastasia, now masquerading as Anya.

Meanwhile, Anya, Dimitri, and Vlad board a train destined for Paris but are forced to take refuge in the baggage car after their passports' coloration raises suspicions. Unbeknownst to them, Rasputin's minions are plotting to derail the train, sending it hurtling into a canyon. In a heart-pumping escape, our trio narrowly avoids catastrophe as they flee from the brink of disaster.

As they embark on the next leg of their journey, Vlad regales Anya with tales of Sophie (Bernadette Peters), a first cousin of the Dowager Empress who has developed a keen eye for spotting imposter Anastasias. Anya's indignation at being left in the dark about the necessity of proving her identity is palpable, yet Vlad's words of wisdom eventually prevail, convincing her that Paris may hold secrets and surprises waiting to be uncovered. The trio begins to brush up on etiquette and Romanov history, laying the groundwork for their forthcoming adventures.

Their travels take them by ship from Germany to the City of Light, where Dimitri (character) and Anya perform a breathtaking waltz, drawing them closer together as they twirl across the dance floor. However, their romantic interlude is disrupted when Rasputin invades Anya's dreams, threatening to send her tumbling over the edge of the vessel until Dimitri intervenes to save the day.

Undeterred by these setbacks, Rasputin resolves to return to the mortal realm and confront Anastasia personally, with Bartok reluctantly tagging along. Meanwhile, Anya, Dimitri, and Vlad make their way to Paris, oblivious to the Dowager Empress's decision to abandon her search for her granddaughter.

Their arrival at the Empress's mansion is a timely one, as Sophie answers the door, still reeling from her cousin's decree. Despite having been privy to the Empress's wishes, she remains skeptical of Anya's claims, pressing her for details about Anastasia's daring escape from the Palace. Dimitri's trepidation grows as Anya reveals that a young boy opened a secret passage, allowing her and the Dowager Empress to make their escape.

Sophie is impressed by Anya's responses, but hints at Marie's desire not to be bothered with visitors. Vlad insists on meeting the Empress, and Sophie coyly reveals that she will be attending a performance of the Russian Ballet that evening. As they prepare for the night ahead, Sophie whisks them away on a shopping spree for new attire.

Later, Dimitri takes Vlad aside to share his epiphany: with Anya's remarkable escape story, he is convinced that their intended impostor is indeed the real Anastasia – the very same young boy who aided her and the Dowager Empress in their daring getaway. However, their conversation is interrupted by Anya's arrival, and they make their way to their box at the Opera Hall.

As intermission approaches, Dimitri and Anya (Anastasia) slip away to a private box, where Sophie allows Dimitri to pay his respects to the Empress. However, Marie's keen intuition alerts her to Dimitri's true intentions, and she swiftly exposes his schemes, resulting in his abrupt dismissal from the Empress's presence. Unbeknownst to Dimitri, Anya has been privy to their entire conversation, having observed the subtle opening of the box door that went unnoticed by him.

Undeterred, Dimitri waits until Marie departs the Opera House and then takes on the guise of her chauffeur, transporting her to Anya's residence. He demands an audience with Marie, but she remains resolute until he produces a cherished music box left behind after her and Anastasia's daring escape through the secret door.

Moved by this poignant reminder, Marie relents and engages in a heart-to-heart conversation with Anya. As they converse, Anya reveals her deep-seated longing to find her true place in the world, and Marie is touched by the locket she wears around her neck. The music box's familiar melody serves as a catalyst for Anya's memories to resurface, and Marie is overjoyed at being reunited with her long-lost granddaughter.

Later that evening, Marie presents Dimitri with the reward for his role in reuniting her with Anastasia, but he declines the offer, choosing instead to bask in the knowledge that he has facilitated a family reunion. As he departs, Anya is left to ponder her feelings for Dimitri, believing him to have received his just reward.

In the midst of a Parisian social function, Marie and Anastasia mingle among the guests. Though Anastasia appears distant, Marie senses her granddaughter's true emotions - a secret longing for Dimitri that remains unrequited. As Marie takes her leave to join the festivities, she imparts wise words to Anya, encouraging her to follow her heart and choose a path that brings her happiness.

In the shadows, however, a sinister figure lurks. Anastasia becomes distracted by her playful puppy, leading her on a winding path through the garden. As she approaches a nearby bridge, Rasputin emerges from the fog, his malevolent intentions focused on snuffing out Anastasia's life. Dimitri, having experienced a change of heart, returns to thwart the mad monk's plans. In the ensuing chaos, Anastasia seizes hold of Rasputin's reliquary and destroys it, finally putting an end to the 'mad monk's' nefarious schemes.

As the dust settles on their tumultuous journey, Anastasia (character name) and Dimitri find themselves standing at the threshold of a new chapter in their lives. The air is thick with anticipation as they candidly reveal their long-suppressed emotions to one another, their words hanging precariously between them like the tender petals of a budding flower. With the weight of their confessions settled upon them, they make the bold decision to seize control of their destinies and flee into a future shrouded in uncertainty. Anastasia's choice to renounce her royal legacy for the sake of love is met with unbridled joy by her grandmother, who pronounces it a "perfect beginning" for the star-crossed lovers. As they vanish into the horizon, leaving the trappings of their former lives behind, it becomes clear that this union marks not only the start of a new chapter in their personal histories but also the dawn of a brighter, more radiant era for both Anastasia and Dimitri.
