In a bizarre turn of events, Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson), the eccentric caretaker of the British national gallery in London, England, narrowly escapes being terminated by the museum’s board of directors due to his abysmal work ethic and penchant for dozing off on the job. However, the Chairman of the board, who harbors a peculiar fondness for Bean, decides against firing him and instead dispatches him to Los Angeles, where David Langley (character), curator of a downtown L.A. museum, has requested an art scholar from the British national gallery to discuss their latest acquisition, Whistler’s Mother, a prized painting valued at $50 million, donated by General Newton.

Bean’s arrival in Los Angeles sets off a chain reaction of chaos, as his pocket gun trick inadvertently triggers a terrorist alert at LAX. David invites Bean to stay with his family, which proves to be a recipe for disaster, causing problems for David’s marriage and culminating in his wife Alison’s (character) departure from the home after Bean recklessly destroys a frame gifted by her mother.

As tensions escalate, the museum director warns David that the impending unveiling of Whistler’s Mother is the most crucial event in the gallery’s history, and that Bean is his chosen representative. Undeterred, David stands by Bean, even as the latter’s antics become increasingly outlandish. At an amusement park, Bean gets arrested for tampering with ride controls, causing a potentially catastrophic malfunction.

The mayhem spills over into David’s home, where Bean’s microwave mishap results in a turkey explosion that leaves the dinner party in disarray. As the unveiling ceremony approaches, David discovers that Bean is not a doctor and knows nothing about art, but it’s too late to alter the course of events. Returning home, David finds Alison waiting, having returned because she missed him but ultimately deciding to leave him after witnessing his drunken state.

As Bean’s conscience weighs heavy, he decides to take drastic measures and infiltrates the gallery under the cover of night. With calculated precision, he replaces the valuable artwork with a convincing forgery, meticulously crafting an authentic appearance using egg white and nail polish remover. The unveiling is met with unbridled success, and Bean’s humble speech earns him widespread acclaim.

However, Bean’s momentary triumph is swiftly eclipsed by grave news: his friend David receives word that his daughter has been involved in a harrowing motorcycle accident. In a state of distress, David rushes to the hospital, only to find Bean mistakenly whisked away to an operating room where he unexpectedly saves the life of a critically injured police officer. Moreover, Bean’s quick thinking and medical acumen allow him to successfully revive David’s comatose daughter, earning Alison’s gratitude.

As a token of his appreciation, David asks Bean to extend his stay with the family, and to everyone’s surprise, their unlikely friendship blossoms into a deeply meaningful bond. As a heartfelt gesture of thanks, David acknowledges Bean’s selfless heroics, which ultimately prompt Bean to return to London, where he finds an unexpected memento waiting for him: the very painting he had so skillfully defaced now adorns his bedroom wall, a poignant reminder of the unpredictable twists life can take.
